Karate became a passion of Penny’s many years ago and she gained her “Ni Dan” or second degree black belt in Kempo Bushido Ryu. This is a Japanese karate linear style and she studied under Shihan Mike Ryan at Glenfield dojo in Auckland. Penny held the NZ record for breaking 13 roof tiles with her foot for many years. She also studied Chuan Fa, a circular Chinese style and Tai Chi, which is wonderful for meditation and mindfulness. Penny taught at the dojo and also taught self-defence to Air New Zealand hostesses who were at risk in overseas destinations. Penny also taught self-defence to students at her previous schools.
Penny is now enjoying the opportunity to pass on this martial art with its discipline, precise movement in forms, weaponry and most importantly, to give valuable lessons in self-defence to our students at Nga Tawa.
